CV Tips

How to write a CV

Covering Letter

You should always include a covering letter as an introduction to yourself and expressing an interest with reasons as to why you are applying for the particular role.  This is sometimes thought by clients, to be as just as important as the actual CV itself.

The CV
Under normal circumstances the CV should be no more than 3 pages in length.  It should be well presented and easy for people to read (the use of a word processor will help with this). The following is a guide to help you with writing your CV:

Personal Details
Your CV should include your full name, home and email addresses, home and mobile telephone numbers.

Personal Profile
Your CV is a tool to promote yourself.  To do this you will need to present yourself in terms of your skills, strengths, experience and knowledge. Give examples of skills gained from successful activities and highlight your strengths in communication, team working, problem solving and management - be positive. Tailor your profile specifically to the role you are applying for.

Education
Always start with the most recent and work back.
Include names and dates of the education institutes you attended along with what subjects you took and grades achieved.
Do not include primary school details.

Additional Information
You might not think this area is important but it is an integral part of your CV.  You will need to include any Professional Institutes you are a member of, any relevant health and safety certificates held and identify your computer software skill level.

Employment History
Present your employment history starting with your current employer first.
Employment dates should be made clear – month and year.
Any periods where you were not working should be explained.
Previous employer names should be correct and your position held within that company should be made clear.
Under your employer and your job role include a full brief of projects/ contracts worked on including values, location and duration.  To end with, include your actual duties and responsibilities.

Hobbies and Interests
This paragraph will help prospective employers to learn more about you as a person.
This should be kept straight to the point.

References
Two professional references with names and contact details should be included.
You should include your present employers details, but don’t let this worry you as no references can be acted upon without your prior consent.
